Dj Shadow is coming to Ghent the 25th of May. Yeah, The Outsider wasn’t this and that but the man still has got a whole lot of credit in my neck of the woods. Too many haters if you ask us as the man still got his skills it seems.

Met some great people, had some great experiences, (re)discovered artists, heard some great mixtapes, saw wonderfull street art, got some (product) reviews up and overall featured some great content (although it was not always that great ).

Concertwise we had a good year, with highlights being a studio session by MGMT, the Prodigy concert in Lille, a showcase by Janelle Monae, Chromeo in BXL and the Gorillaz concert in Antwerp.

We also crossed the border several times. Ended up visiting London for Young Scum and ended up there two weekends in a row due to circumstances, went to Paris for the Offf Festival, where we got to stay in the great Hidden Hotel. After that we topped this all off with held a midsummer roadtrip to Croatia & Slovenia before finishing the summer with a quick visit to Amsterdam.

Started reading again in between this all and did some home brewing before finishing everything of with some family time in MT.

As you can see, we ended up sharing all these experiences and still this ended up being the blogpost which read the most throughout the entire year.

All we can say, 2010 has been a blast and who would have thought we would be able to have done it all from one of the greatest cities in the world! Have a great time going from old to new and we’ll see each other once again in 2011! Out with the old one says!

Little Dragon makes, as you will discover below, electronic music. The Swedish-Japanese synth pop act drew my attention (although their sound wasn’t great) opening for Gorillaz and curiosity got the best of me as I ended up getting both of their albums.

I must admit, something different and I really like their self-titled début album from 2007. Strange that I had never discovered this one before.

Thursday we found ourselves en route for the Lotto Arena where Gorillaz would give their best during a 2 hour long show.

Excitement, we had always wanted to see Gorillaz, we even had some half plans to go see them abroad as we had given up on them ever visiting BE. Who would have ever said that they’d finish their Escape To Plastic Beach Tour here?! Considering this, expectations were even higher as the average band usually goes that extra stretch when finishing a tour. Last gigs on the list usually are the better ones as everyone on stage knows they’ll be going home the next day.

Needless to say this was the case for the 25+ musicians we saw on stage throughout the evening. Yes, you read right! Right from the start Damon and his companions (Mick Jones en Paul Simonon, ex-The Clash btw) surrounded themselves with an array of additional monkeys. At its low a good 10-15 strong, but at its high a whopping 30 people found their way on stage. Throughout the concert people would join in and leave again. Amongst these Little Dragon, De La Soul, soul legend Bobby Womack, Kano, the Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and even legend MF Doom!!

Really, its amazing when you consider that these people all are touring with Gorillaz in order to perform 1-2 tracks and if you ask us, that is what defines Gorillaz and makes their concert great. It defines Gorillaz, making them everything we expected them to be. A feast for all you senses and withou exagerating one of (if not THE) the greatest concerts I ever witnessed.

The visual projections demanded our undevoted attention throughout the concert while your ears an body are blasted at with great sound, not knowing who will be joining in next on stage (as you will se below).

“When I was young…” seems to be a hot topic for me more than ever lately as I have discovered I am not that high school kid I used to be anymore. Pondering back upon those times I discovered musical tastes shifted from one end of the spectrum to another, although my love for hardcore, metal & all other related sub genres still remains.

Every day I would walk to the bus stop on my way to school, with the black hoodie on, latest Roadrunner Records release blasting through my headphones, … No weekend passed by without going to a gig, where the highlight used to be a good mosh. Hatebreed, Slipknot, Slayer, Machine Head, Killswitch Engage, Sepultura, Soulfly, System of a Down, Deftones, Sick of it All, Fear Factory … (just to name a few). We all saw them bulldozer on through festivals & concert halls straight from the front row.

Reflecting on this I realised I can’t really remember the first time I experienced a good mosh. A pity, cause I probably had no idea what had just happened For outsiders it often seems as a shitload of people trying to beat the hell out of each other.

Well, that’s how you can put it if you want to keep it plain and simple for people. You can not describe the warm and exciting feeling of the adrenaline pumping through your veins. Its a bit like what Fight Club must feel like with the difference being that you usually don’t end up a bloody mess

Now some injuries do occur here and there off course. I have had my share of bumps and bruises, with a dislocated thumb being the worst pain in the world, broken glasses, torn shirts, … but the pit has its rules and etiquette. For instance, if someone falls in the pit, you pick them back up right away. In the end its all about having a bit of fun.

Now, one might be wondering where this reminiscing all come forth from? Well, a while back I stumbled upon a vid by some crew member for Chimaira. It was shot at Graspop back in 2004 and I am one of the crowd somewhere in the front rows. I could not stop thinking about how we used to go all out back in the day . Out.

The passed week has been a low involvement one when it comes to OOTB. The agenda was flooded with events and I must say it has been one hell of a week with little sleep, lots of running around,  great laughs, but also some disappointments.

Tuesday was Mos Def day, with him showing up in the Vooruit. I had been anticipating his show for a while now and man was I excited to see/hear him do his thing. Lefto warmed up the crowd, together with half a dozen other local acts, and you could feel that there was electricity in the air among a very divers crowd. Great to see Mo & Grazz among them by the way. What a duo! Needless to say, Mos was on a roll and it was way more different then I had expected.

Still do not know what the hell Democrazy was thinking with their extended warm-up though, as they exhausted a huge part of the crowd with their waiting (read lets ca$h some money) game. By the time Mos started I was shattered I must admit.

Yesterday marked the avant-première for Philips’ Parallel Lines. Workrelated event, but pleasant none the less On the agenda, 5 movie shorts which drew our attention as soon as we had seen the trailer.

The project was set up together with the Ridley Scott Association, who selected 5 directors who take part. All of them were asked to make a short film with the only input being a brief which contained 6 scripts lines. The end results could not have been more diverse. So defintely have a look.

On another note we had some great news concerning #youngscum BE. Its starting to get shape and the location will be unveiled somewhere next week I recon. Mark April the 22nd in your agenda and make sure you are in Ghent that evening. Out.

Fridays usually are hell for me. Its the last working day of the week (which already is way to short to get everything done) and generally marks the start of a hectic weekend schedule. Rushing from A to B, little sleep, …

This weekend wasn’t any different, although it started off pleasantly with me heading to BXL where I was invited to attend Studio Brussels’ Club 69. Yes, you read well, I was one of the lucky few to witness MGMT play a small & needless to say exclusive gig in the Marconi Studio

It was one of the few smaller sessions MGMT will be playing this year and you could feel that Ben, Andrew & their fellow partners in crime enjoyed it. The sound was great, the crowd small, the vibe intimate. I guess that is what it must have felt like for them at the start of it all and it must have been a great change of atmosphere in comparison to all the concert hall or festival gigs they have lined-up.

Throughout the set their main focus was to showcase some new tracks. So what they brought was sometimes unknown for the crowd but luckily there was an electric feel & time to pretend also in it for them.

Pity my 3G connection was down inside the venue or I would have tried to stream some bits here and there

The new album itself will be released on April 9. More psychedelic electro-pop (do not really know how to describe it otherwise) tracks than before and I must admit I have enjoyed listening to it. You can listen to Congratulations entirely on their site.

I enjoyed the session and all that remains is to say thanks to Sony Belgium for the invite & @boskabout for the company. Out.

Last night I found myself at NTGent, spending an evening with Henry, Henry Rollins that is. Now for those of you who are not familiar with this 40-something pissed off tattooed hardcore punk-rock icon on Vans, Google and YouTube him as you might learn a thing or two. You might then find out you know him as the face for Black Flag. Yes, the band that never before sold as many t-shirts as the passed years as hipsters worldwide embraced them

Now I have always been fascinated by Mr Rollins and since he was in the neighborhood I thought I could not miss out on him. Having spent all day painting the new house I definitely was up for some good old fashioned entertainment. Am I glad it was Henry who had the honors to do so, as what I witnessed was a verbal machine like no other. A missile on speed, telling his stories and experiences at such a rate I have never witnessed before, and this for almost 3 straight hours (without even drinking a sip of water!!).

From his experiences traveling the world, to his new acting adventure playing a skinhead in Sons of Anarchy to his involvement in the US presidential elections. It all got a place in his storytelling.

If there is one element that remained stuck in my mind, it was his rant on “Freedom of Speech” and how important this is for him. A pillar of the American institution and the essence of spoken word I might say, although he walked a fine line with certain statements there. Out.

Relentless, an unfamiliar word for many I presume. A great word, a word which carries raw energy. A word also connected to a brand which I had never before heard of: Relentless. Yet another energy drink [owned by Coca Cola] it seems.

I added the trailer above of what I must admit is a ‘branded film’ like I have never seen before. Nicely captured images and edited with fitting finesse and music. The full length film [embeded below] was released in October. You can satisfy all your extra information needs overhere.

What follows is a journey through snow filled landscapes, the roaring waves under the Tahitian sun and a walk through the sweaty moshpit of a Gallows gig. All in super slow-mo with a theatrical soundtrack in the background. Out.

Yesterday marked a night we had all been waiting/talking about for a while. Another edition of Ill City in Petrol Antwerp with yet again a great line-up: Flinke Namen, ZwartLicht & especially Dio. Bad news hit us hard though about an hour before our departure to the CITY (‘tStad) as Dio seemed to be stuck in Paris and had to cancel. We heard bad weather hit France hard in the news, but it hit us even harder. I kid you not when I say that we had been wanting to witness him live for over a year now after a lot of my friends discovered his albums/mixtapes on our snowtrip last year.

Anyways, ice cold outside, but no snow would hold us back from headin’ on out to Antwerp. We packed my car and headed on out to find Lefto spinnin’ the decks. Warm-up round for him, which could not be taken any more literally as at that moment my feet had semi-frozen

Opening on stage however was mr Broodje Bakpao Gers himself. The suprise warming up paved the road for Flinke Namen (who we’ve been aching to see for while). Highlights being Wolken and Roll je raam. A great gig by Flexican and his crew, but it was ZwartLicht who lit the Petrol up.

Driven by Hayzee‘s beats (winner of Redbull’s Beat Battle which was held in A’dam passed summer), this was the spark we needed. Bliksemschicht! Hands went up, people were bouncing around as two and a half hours of dutch hip hop reached their climax. I can now say I’ll be in de Nijdrop coming februari as I’ve got to witness ZwartLicht de nouveau. Out.
