Quick one, as last week I opened my mailbox to find a question from the guys behind Id-iom asking if I “would like to feature their latest screenprint“. I did not really know what to do with it, but they happened to mention their previous guerrilla packaging endeavor. Now this drew my attention…

Id-iom is made up of two brothers who work together on their projects out of London (guess we might meet at Young Scum #1 so?!). Motivated by the fact that people would actually have the chance to see their work (rather than doing stuff on paper/canvas and just have them sitting around the house) they started doing work out on the streets a few years back. The whole possibility of getting caught also makes it quite amusing according to Sholto.

The Bubble Project drew my attention once again today. Its been around for a while but thought I’d share it for those who have never seen. Over 50,000 bubble stickers have been printed. They have been continually placed on top of ads on the streets of New York. They are left blank, inviting passersby to fill them in. This project instantly transforms the intrusive and dull corporate monologues into a public dialogue. Our public spaces are returned back to the public. Since its launch in 2002, the Bubble Project has become a global project. Bubblers all around the globe are bubbling their own towns.

How to take part yourself is rather easy, as they have provided ready to use speech bubbles. So take to the streets and start adbusting away. Out.

“For centuries, bartenders around the world have considered the perfect Stella Artois and art form. Now, artists in New York are proving it.”

As a semi-Belgian I practically grew up with Stella Artois and I’ve been following the way they’re taking the “wife beater” to a new international level step by step.

Now the following project, named “The Ritual Project“, is taking place near Crosby & Broome SoHo (NYC). The concept is rather simple and given right of the start as an introduction on the site.

Stella Artois is crafted with centuries of brewing tradition. But there is an equally rich tradition in how the beer is served. To celebrate this, Stella Artois commissioned a group of New York City painters to bring the pouring ritual to life high above the city streets. Step by step, they are painting the perfect pint.

The result is an outdoor time-lapse which will take over three weeks to finish. At the end of all the hard labour, the time lapse should showcase each of nine laborious steps behind the perfect glass of Stella.

Can’t wait to see the end result as I recon it is going to blow us away just as the Sony Bravia ads have in the passed. By the way, bare in mind that somewhere there’s a mad man that sold Stella on the idea of this. (wonder how many Stella’s they had to drink to get so far ) In the meantime I embedded every clip I could find here, but there is more. Defintely check the project journal as its got some great photos & anecdotes of the entire process. An inspiration for advertisers across the globe don’t you think?! Out.

New York City is covered with illegal billboards and advertisements. Last year, some people decided to claim back public space though by covering over 120 illegal billboards with art work art for a brief moment in time. Jordan Seiler of Public Ad Campaign, orchestrated this  massive one-day takeover of illegal, street level advertising in NY. The paint roller does not use any sort of paint, it simply contains green LEDs. Software then tracks the color green and outputs the x y position which are sent to drawing commands and the strokes are textured with video. I suggest you simply check the embedded clip and see how they combine video projections with LED-lit paint rollers. Enjoy. Out.

Seems the Australian Childhood Foundation (and their ad agency) has created a great street/guerilla marketing campaign for their Stop Child Abuse campaign. The campaign uses child size dolls (representing neglected children) which are placed in high traffic locations throughout cities. A huge billposter is then pasted over the dolls and people can read the words “Neglected Children are made to feel invisible.”

Once the dolls are removed the text “Thank you for seeing me” becomes visible. A lot of non-profit organisations don’t have the means for huge allround campaigns. Its this kind of low-cost thinking we like. Effective to a certain degree and worthwile even if only a couple of 100 people see it. It might just spark those couple of important conversations.

Btw, I might be wrong here, but I think they used Helvetica as font for the posters. As we’ve pulled a whole lot of new readers the passed days I suggest you also check our guestblogger Kenneth’s post on the fontation of life. Out.

“A simple image promoting nothing, asking nothing; but giving a lot.”

Our daily lives are flooded with advertising. Our streets are covered in billboards and television seems to be one long chain of commercials. “As you walk through your world you will find yourself bombarded with a white-noise of images that promise or imply or accuse.”

The Free Range Duck project claims to have the solution for us. “We want to find the space in-between this visual cacophony and place there a bit of light, a bit of love, a smile, or even just a thought. And we want you to help. The Duck aims to please in the simplest form. To coax a smile as you pass by. There is no hidden agenda, there is no grand intention, other than to spread the Duck far and wide and bring a bit of light relief in our visually saturated media environment.“

Anyone can download the duck (as it is licensed under creative commons) print it, paste it, remix it, trash it, stick it or post it on flyers, websites, walls & street signs throughout the world. “We want the Duck to grow and flourish, so please feel free to help him grow, include him in your own designs, sow the seeds for others, the only condition we ask is that you make no money from the image. This is beyond money. This is Fun.”

Crowdsourcing, guerilla marketing, community marketing, … words we constantly hear within the ad world. Well this project is a great and inspiring example for us all. Its once again the community aspect (that is built up around it)  and creative commons element what makes it such a great project . There’s a group of people spread throughout the world that pick up the duck, customise it to their specifications or keep it untouched, yet spreading it.

The  concept is rather simple. You buy a cheap memory card, put it in your digital camera and take some authentic pictures. Once you’ve chosen what to keep on the card, you name it and leave it behind somewhere in a public place with a note explaining the concept. The person who finds the memory card then has to take some pictures himself (using the same card) and drop it elsewhere once he’s finished. He should also post the images he found on the card to PhotoChaining.com so everyone can see them and include a tip with the whereabouts of the memory card in order that other people can find it and contribute their creations.

So to wrap up this piece about PhotoChaining:

1. Take funny/original/humoristic/creative photos with your own camera and use a cheap memory card

2. Write a note in which you explain in few words the PhotoChaining concept to the “finder” of it and provide a name for the memory card (check PhotoChaining to ensure that the name has not already been used)

3. Put the memory card and the note in a transparent plastic bag

4. Leave the plastic bag in a public place

5. Help other people to find your memory card by giving them indications on the website

Over on facebook there’s also a group for the PhotoChaining project. It’s a rather simple concept and the success of it totally depends on the people who find the cards off course. I recon with summer in sight I’ll buy myself a couple of cheap cards and start a chain of my own in Ghent…
