Yesterday RedBull Belgium premiered The Art of Flight in Brussels. The movie has been on a world tour throughout this fall (after having been released earlier in September) and yesterday Travis Rice & co found their way to Brussels. The ‘sold out’ (ticket were up for grabs through RedBull’s site) venue was Studio 4 in Flagey, a great location that was for this event.

The movie/documentary itself follows Travis Rice, John Jackson, Mark Landvik, Scotty Lago, Jake Blauvelt, Nicolas Müller, Gigi Rüf, DCP and Pat Moore as they dream up new global adventures and progress the sport to unimaginable levels. For this, production company Brain Farm gathered an arsenal of the most advanced and progressive filmmaking technology to bring the masses a snowboarding adventure of epic proportions. Filmed on location in Jackson Hole, Alaska, Chile, Aspen, Patagonia, British Columbia, … the movie brings viewers along for the perfect blend of adventure/travel drama and high-energy snowboarding action.

Overall the verdict was that its a great (and I really mean GREAT) snowboard movie if not the most epic of them all. Everything about the movie was super-sized, from the budget (read it was around $2 million) to the riding. A mix of sweeping landscape shots of enormous mountains and huge rides/jumps. Even the run time of an hour and a half is more than twice that of your average snowboard films. The sheer size of everything just blows you away and I reckon anyone will appreciate watching it.

The screening tour continues to Amsterdam, Paris, Stockholm & Moscow throughout the week. If you can attend one of the dates I suggest you do or get your hands on a copy  of the DVD. Besides impressive the footage the movie also has a great soundtrack worth checking out.

Dupstep, often people love it or they hate it and lately I happen to find myself tuning into to it more often as I would have thought a while back. I reckon it grows upon you and as with all music, there’s as much good as there is awfull stuff.

A while back I also happened to get a hold on BASSWEIGHT, a feature length documentary that offers an unparalleled insight into the subterranean world of Dubstep. Having found the time to watch it last week we just had to mention this one as we enjoyed watching it.

Now the documentary isn’t all that spectacular, but its a nice piece of work and never seems to bore as the emphasis throughout the doc is not dubstep’s current success but rather dubsteps growth from its obscure origins in south London to global recognition today. It tries to give you an understanding on the mentality and context of the people and its scene at the moment everything started to grow and how & where everything will grow to in the future.

In order to do so, it features in-depth interviews with many of the DJ’s, producers and promoters who have been instrumental in the genres ongoing evolution: Skream, Benga, Kode9 and Mary Anne Hobbs are just a few amongst many others.

Besides this it also pays attention to the scene’s impressive spread across Europe, Brazil and Japan, demonstrating the impact artists have had on an international level. Or how underground music can still be relevant in this 21st Century.

Thursday we found ourselves heading to the Belgian Tron Legacy première in Ghent. The people behind it all were so kind to send us an invite and before we knew it we found ourselves walking up a red laser-beam carpet amongst good company.

Curious to see what all the fuzz was/is about, we took our seats, put on our 3D glasses (the movie is partially 3D, partially 2D), sat back in our seats and waited to get blown away by the sequel to the 1982 film Tron.

First off, you don’t go to see Tron Legacy for the dialogue or story in my opinion, you go for the graphics/visual thunderstorm they blast at you & the already legendary Daft Punk soundtrack.  I also have to add that you must go see the movie in a theatre as I doubt you can have the same experience on a home screen.

That’s what makes it a good movie and I expect that the film savvy people of the interwebs will share their professional opinions the next days/weeks, making my opinion utterly irrelevant

Seems the GZA has been collecting a lot of Wu-Tang footage for a while now (over 10 years) and this footage will be surfacing pretty soon in what will be called Wu-Tang Revealed. Three years in the make, giving us a behind the scenes we already had a pretty good idea on.

Check out the new trailer below. It mainly gave me the picture we already had of the Wu: ca$h rules everything around them I guess you can take some kids out of the hood but you can’t take the hood out of them (to slip in a little cliché here). Wonder if its gonna be as hilarious as the Metallica documentary though

What we also picked up is Meths statement ‘its all about timing’. We’ve heard this one before, but can not help but wonder if they will be reuniting for one more effort. Out.

Girl Power! It ain’t a reference for the Spice Girls, nor a shout driven by female emancipation. What is it so? Well, the first feature-length documentary film about girls painting graffiti.

The idea behind the Girl Power project was born in Prague in 2008 during the filming of a short video with female graffiti artists. After its completion and success they thought, why not explore this topic a little deeper. Soon the film crew soon found themselves travelling across 15 European countries, crossing the Atlantic to graffiti’s birthplace New York, …

The Bicycle Portraits project was initiated by Stan Engelbrecht (Cape Town, South Africa) and Nic Grobler (Johannesburg, South Africa) early in 2010. Whenever they can, together or separately, they’re on the lookout for fellow commuters, and people who use bicycles as part of their everyday work, to meet and photograph. They’re finding out who rides bicycles, why they ride bicycles and why they love their bicycles.

This project really sparked my attention and with the World Cup going down in South Africa I though it was a nice feature on the country that is not football centered You can find all the extended info over here on the what, how and what not.

They are working towards a full-color hard-cover book btw and it seems you can pledge and pre-order through their Kickstarter initiative. Follow the project on twittah. Out.

Anoter quick one in between all the other stuff. Remember Snakes on a Plane? That was epic. Remember Grindhouse? That was also epic. Well brace yourself as the following is going to blow your minds.

Hobo with a Shotgun fake trailer

What the ****?! Its called Hobo with a shotgun and is a new full length movie on which production has just started.If you’ve heard of it before, it’ll be because Hobo With a Shotgun was the title of a fan-made fake trailer produced for Grindhouse, the notorious Tarantino/Rodriguez film which did not live up to peoples expectations I might ad.

Well, now it’s being turned into a full length flick, starring the one and only Rutger Hauer as the shotgun-handling hobo.

Remarkable is the fact that this is already the second of the Grindhouse’s fake trailers to be transformed into a full-length movie. Previously Machete had already gone into production and will be released this summer. We just happened to cross a bootleg trailer for this new flick by Rodriguez today by the way. Electronic music in all its forms (and yes I really mean all its forms) can tickle my senses once in a while.

Couple of days ago my eyes fell upon a documentary film based on the Electro(nic) music scene in the US of A. Its called The Electro Wars and judging on the trailer it is worth a check when its released somewhere in May. Right now we just have got a hunch. Great to see how Europe & lately even more Africa has such an impact across the pond when it comes to electronic music.

“Wax on… wax off. Wax on… wax off.” is one of the memorable quotes of the karate kid. Mr Miyagi explaining the ideal car waxing technique and how it teaches you karate moves. Hilarious (or at least when I was a kid it was). Mr Miyagi always was a figure that interested me as a kid. The whole karate/kung-fu shizzle on tv was fascinating. Kids and their dreams Anyways just found out they are going to release a new karate kid flick next year. Trailer looks cool. The new kid is Will Smith‘s son btw. Out.

Wolverine, the Hulk, Flash … all superhero favorites. Well soon, in april, another ‘hero’ movie will be hitting theatres: Kick-Ass!

It tells us the story of an average teenager whi goes by the name Dave Lizewski, a comic-book fan, who decides to take his obsession to the next level. Inspired by his comics he decides to become a real-life superhero. Just like any other superhero, he picks a name “Kick-Ass” and assembles a suit and matching mask to wear before he starts fighting crime. But… there’s only one problem, as he  absolutely has no superpowers.

The trailer looks great, so it made me wonder if this movie is going to be kick-ass… Out.

Now I ain’t gonna talk about the plot for The Wire, as there are plenty of sites that will explain it to you all. What I will say is that many have started watching McNaulty & co and got hooked. Its one of my all time favorites (next to OZ), better then Sopranos or any other series if you ask me, and I regret that the end was reached after 5 seasons.

Now last week I saw the following clip spread on out through the intertwebs. Its a compilation of the 100 best quotes from the series. If you’ve seen all episodes you may enjoy this as its a quick recap really. Out.

“For centuries, bartenders around the world have considered the perfect Stella Artois and art form. Now, artists in New York are proving it.”

As a semi-Belgian I practically grew up with Stella Artois and I’ve been following the way they’re taking the “wife beater” to a new international level step by step.

Now the following project, named “The Ritual Project“, is taking place near Crosby & Broome SoHo (NYC). The concept is rather simple and given right of the start as an introduction on the site.

Stella Artois is crafted with centuries of brewing tradition. But there is an equally rich tradition in how the beer is served. To celebrate this, Stella Artois commissioned a group of New York City painters to bring the pouring ritual to life high above the city streets. Step by step, they are painting the perfect pint.

The result is an outdoor time-lapse which will take over three weeks to finish. At the end of all the hard labour, the time lapse should showcase each of nine laborious steps behind the perfect glass of Stella.

Can’t wait to see the end result as I recon it is going to blow us away just as the Sony Bravia ads have in the passed. By the way, bare in mind that somewhere there’s a mad man that sold Stella on the idea of this. (wonder how many Stella’s they had to drink to get so far ) In the meantime I embedded every clip I could find here, but there is more. Defintely check the project journal as its got some great photos & anecdotes of the entire process. An inspiration for advertisers across the globe don’t you think?! Out.

A French ad agency/collective called H5 drew my attention yesterday evening with a trailer for a really interesting film they released called Logorama. Now, I previously had never heard of them but seems they’re the creatives behind several music vids, with Alex Gopher’s The Child & Röyksopps Remind Me being the most known.

Logorama is “a short film, which visualizes and explores the way that logos are increasingly embedded in our existence.” In it, you’ll see the Michelin Man, the Haribo kid, Bob’s Big Boy, Mr. Pringle and Ronald McDonald, but in some very unfamiliar roles playing classic movie archetypes of good and bad guys.

Thefilm earned the Best Short Film honor in the Cannes Critics’ Week Competition at this years film festival, which means that the embeded clip of the trailer is more than worthwhile. The second clip seems to be the opening scene btw. Enjoy. Out.

From Gus Van Sant’s film, Paranoid Park, to the success of MTV’s Rob & Big and national ad campaigns around the world that use skateboarding as a way to connect with the youth culture, skateboarding continues to serve as a creative launching pad for aspiring actors, graphic designers, and filmmakers alike. In many cases it is the common thread that unites – their source of passion.”

This August the first ever Skateboard Film Festival will be held in Seattle, as a collaborative effort by some of the industry’s most respected entrepreneurs, filmers, photographers, and skateboarders in an effort  to enable, nurture, promote and encourage the next generation of skateboard filmmakers as they have to inspire, lead and entertain the world with their stories and creativity.

The festival is open to the public and anyone can submit their videos, which will be judged within several categories. Wether its a short or full-length movie, it doesn’t mather and some 40-60 videos will be shown during the film festival weekend itself.

Now all this talk of skateboard flicks has fuelled my appetite for some good trailers. I suggest you check out the festivals spot. It features a sh*tload of great trailers & footage. The one I picked to feature is: SOUR “Skateboarding for Peace in the Middle East“. SOUR is the first urban skate documentary to be filmed in the middle east; offering a fresh, fast-paced and inspiring perspective of peace building and Middle Eastern urban youth culture. Filmed during the Lebanon/Israel War back in 2006, SOUR brings us a youthful ensemble of top Arab and Israeli skaters jumping borders and culture barriers to share a united passion for skating and life.

The second clip is a teaser for Isenseven’s upcoming euro shred extravaganza “Let’s Go Get Lost.” Its a snowboarding dvd that will be released soon and I just had to feature somewhere soon as its looking to become one hell of a flick. Especially check out the light graffiti which is featured at the end of the clip. Music to the trailer is “Sushi” by Kyle Andrews btw. Out.
