Been MIA for a couple of weeks so got some backlash when it comes to my words of the day. As you might know/have read, (almost) every single day – when I don’t forget – I post a word of the day on twitter, inspired by my Urban Dictionary Calendar.

Conintuing the tradition in 2012 with a fresh stack I reckon I need to do a quick catch-up for my slacking. What follows are some of the best words I saw the past weeks

nap mouth - The bad taste in your mouth just after waking up from a nap.

time vampire - Something or someone who literally sucks your time like a vampire sucks blood.

seat gypsie - A person or group of people that travel from one unclaimed seat to another (normally at sporting events) because their cheap asses couldn’t fork up the money for better seats. Said people are forced to move once seats are claimed by the rightful ticket holders.

nomonym - When you eat something and it tastes like something else.

cheappuccino - Any of the wide variety of flavored coffee drinks offered at convenience stores that can be purchased for less than half the price of a coffeehouse cappuccino.

X-rayted - TSA rating for airport, naked body scan images.

thrift whore - person who shops at many different thrift stores, thereby often finding wonderful deals.

testicular fortitude - balls, guts, intestinal fortitude

dweet - Twitter tweet sent when drunk. A drunk tweet

airport vultures - Passengers waiting to board a plane who stalk around near and clog up the boarding gate before a flight, regardless of where their seat is or when boarding actually is.

masturdating - Going out alone. I.e. seeing a movie by yourself, going to a restaurant alone.

party claim - Objects left at a party may be claimed by the host.

pornocchio - A person who embellishes their sexcapades to sound cooler.

economic vegetarian - Only eating Vegatables because you can’t afford to buy meat.

dish envy - Sudden, intense longing and regret derived from watching a particularly appetizing dish being delivered to a nearby table.

It started off so well, with snowconditions no-one had seen/expected in ages (2-3m of fresh snow had fallen) and the most relaxed (right after Europe’s X-mas holidays) week of the year in Val Thorens lied ahead. The snowtrip we had been counting down to, talked about it non-stop, checking snow conditions on a daily basis, new board & bindings, … determined it would become this winter’s highlight … but it ended with a broken shoulder after one of the most ridiculous falls in history :( I mean, I could attempt to tell you I was attempting a spectacular jump, but that just ain’t the case Damn you snow!!!

Now its been 2 weeks that I’ve been more or less locked up at home, doctor’s orders to rest the arm/shoulder. No work & hardly any play means I’m a pretty dull boy right now. At least I’ve come to the point where I can type a couple of sentences efficiently without massive pain. Getting round online one-handedly *pun intended* ain’t all that efficient by the way .

Anyways, collected some of the instagrams we took along the way and hope to hit the slopes once again next year as this season might be too soon considering the projected recovery.

Any “best of” list must surely be subjective. This one is no different. Choosing the best photographs of the year is an enormously difficult task, with many terrific photographs slipping through the cracks. But with major news events as a guide, and with single images I fell in love with throughout the year forcing their way into the edit, I look at my favorite pictures from the first four months of the year. Two main stories dominated headlines in the first part of the year: the Japan earthquake and tsunami, and the rising of the Arab Spring. The protests in the Middle East would spread to Greece, Spain, and eventually inspire the Occupy movement in Western nations. Other stories included a historic wave of tornados in the U.S., a Royal wedding in London, and the creation of the world’s newest nation in South Sudan. Lunar eclipse of December 10, 2011 – The Big Picture
The longest lunar eclipse in over ten years animated the night sky on December 10. The red hue resulted from the sun’s light passing through the earth’s atmosphere. Viewers in Asia had the best view of the total eclipse, while those watching in Europe saw part of it at moonrise, and North Americans caught part of it as the moon set. It was not visible in South America or Antarctica. The next total eclipse will occur in 2014.

A rucksack

Bumped into the following Flickr pool in which people post a picture they took of the stuff they log around in their bags. I reckon you can say a lot about people by looking at the stuff they carry around on a daily basis. As I’m a daily backpacker I decided to take a random shot of the semi-useless junk I have been logging around the passed days, weeks or even better months

My main companion is a trusty MacBook Pro and my Kindle E-reader which got a new custom made felt ‘owl’ cover.

Besides that I spot my Golden Half camera and some film, a spork, moleskine notebook, handkerchief, scarf, earplugs, usb cigarette lighter plug, markers, lip balm/chap stick, broken ipod (which urgently needs replacing) and an ear light which regularly comes in handy. Also as I’ve just moved I’m carrying around a measuring tape, has come in handy on a regular the passed weeks. Lighters, pens, … and a toothbrush finish off the clutter more or less.

Latest addition is a Duracell usb charger by the way. Got my hand on the larger version and have been testing it for a while as my iphone is not that reliable anymore. You can easily charge a variety of USB-powered devices with it and the battery itself recharges through a wall socket at home. I can only repeat that its a comfort having back-up power on-the-go in this day and age. Previously I had been using my PowerMonkey (and still do sometimes), but Duracell offers a battery that can handle any device through its own usb cable.

Besides all the other stuff I’ve also got copies of The Word Magazine‘s & Subbacultcha‘s latest issues. Worth a read!

The Bucket List: Six Nations Championship Game

The end of 2011 is nearing, time for some first new year’s resolutions and one of those is to try some new stuff. One of those new try-outs will be rugby and more specific attending a Six Nations Championship game. Tickets for the France – Italy game coming February in Paris’ Stade de France have been delivered and can state I’m looking forward to it. One more thing to get off the bucket list in 2012, hoping to add a premier league football game to this also.

Having said this, I will leave you with this year’s highlights.

They are the first elections since a prodemocracy uprising ousted longtime president Hosni Mubarak from office earlier this year. The poll stations have been remarkably peaceful, despite the simmering anger over the military’s extended role in running the government. In contrast, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s presidential and legislative elections this week were beset by fraud, some observers say. In one town, rebel fighters attacked a polling place, killing at least five people and burning ballots. The voting was Congo’s second since the end of the country’s last war and the first organized by the government rather than the international community.

Libya: Post-Khadafy – The Big Picture
It’s been just over a month since the capture and death of Libyan dictator Moammar Khadafy, ending his 42-year reign. Since then, the rebels have declared that the nation is liberated, installed a transitional government, and started the process of writing a constitution. Still, substantial problems remain. Pockets of fighting have erupted among rival tribes and some rebels have refused to give up their cache of weapons. Doctors continue to struggle to treat the wounded and sick, with a few of the most severely injured being sent to rehabilitation centers in Boston and elsewhere. Last weekend, Khadafy’s son, Seif, was captured and could face war crimes for his part in the conflict.

The Art of Flight World Tour – Brussels

Yesterday RedBull Belgium premiered The Art of Flight in Brussels. The movie has been on a world tour throughout this fall (after having been released earlier in September) and yesterday Travis Rice & co found their way to Brussels. The ‘sold out’ (ticket were up for grabs through RedBull’s site) venue was Studio 4 in Flagey, a great location that was for this event.

The movie/documentary itself follows Travis Rice, John Jackson, Mark Landvik, Scotty Lago, Jake Blauvelt, Nicolas Müller, Gigi Rüf, DCP and Pat Moore as they dream up new global adventures and progress the sport to unimaginable levels. For this, production company Brain Farm gathered an arsenal of the most advanced and progressive filmmaking technology to bring the masses a snowboarding adventure of epic proportions. Filmed on location in Jackson Hole, Alaska, Chile, Aspen, Patagonia, British Columbia, … the movie brings viewers along for the perfect blend of adventure/travel drama and high-energy snowboarding action.

Overall the verdict was that its a great (and I really mean GREAT) snowboard movie if not the most epic of them all. Everything about the movie was super-sized, from the budget (read it was around $2 million) to the riding. A mix of sweeping landscape shots of enormous mountains and huge rides/jumps. Even the run time of an hour and a half is more than twice that of your average snowboard films. The sheer size of everything just blows you away and I reckon anyone will appreciate watching it.

The screening tour continues to Amsterdam, Paris, Stockholm & Moscow throughout the week. If you can attend one of the dates I suggest you do or get your hands on a copy of the DVD. Besides impressive the footage the movie also has a great soundtrack worth checking out.

Thanks to the guys over at RedBull Belgium for the invites. Can’t wait to hit the slopes this winter myself although I will keep it more real(istic) & amateur

Spotify, we haz it

Gunshots, people running mad in the street and lots of cheers yesterday as Spotify deployed its services in Belgium. Or was it just twitter and my facebook wall that got flooded with Spotify related content? All I know is that lots of people were giving Spotify their praise while other unhappy hipsters were calling the music service evil and complaining about some ads that passed by every now and then?

I must admit I had been using Spotify, through a loophole in their system, for a while already. It was accesible, without any ads in between the streams, as they still had to officially get started in Belgium. Now the people from Spotify blessed me with a premium account. No ads, unlimited access to their service on- & offline … I will extensively use this throughout the next weeks, test their service in on the road with the ol’ trusty iphone, … but reckon I already know the outcome as I have already learned that € 9,99 a month for unlimited access to their database on- & offline is not a lot of money.

For the readers who haven’t tried it out, its pretty easy Just hit the download Spotify app button, install and log in with your facebook account (OH NO, not my facebook account?! Yes, you can only log in with you facebook account and it works like a charm.) Next all you have to do is sit back and enjoy some fresh or older tunes.

the Ardennes offensive

Spent past weekend in the Ardennes, a bank holiday in a sunny autumn setting with great/longtime friends.

Chalet Suisse life mainly existed of good food, drinks & little sleep.

It usually also involves maps, guides, walking …

and sometimes people who rather wear their trousers in their sock.

It also means not being allowed in certain areas, I blame the 1% for this personally.

Did I mention ‘a weekend amongst good company’ already?

Fitting club to come along as Volvo was so kind to lend me my horse and carriage for the weekend: V60 R design DRIVe by Volvo A great driving experience overall, with brakes that work like a charm, I can testify after having tested them intensively during a wild bore vs car stand off.

You can see me and the V60 here btw, sporting a green winter jacket and a bordeaux sweater by an unknown brand. Shoes: from the walking type with fancy red laces and stuff. Oh, I’m such a personal blogger … watchout LookBook here I come!
